Guldveterinären issues EU pet passports for dogs and cats travelling within and outside the EU.
Only treatments carried out by a vet may be entered in the EU pet passport.
ID marking
The animal must be ID-marked with a microchip of an ISO standard approved by the Swedish Board of Agriculture. Legible tattoos made before 3 July 2011 are also accepted.
Vaccinations
A valid EU pet passport is always required for rabies vaccination. The passport is usually issued when the animal receives its first rabies vaccination. Rabies vaccine may not be given to an animal without an EU pet passport being filled in at the same time.
However, an EU pet passport can be issued without a rabies vaccination. For example, travel to Norway and Finland requires deworming against fox tapeworm to be recorded in the passport.
For travel within the EU, the passport must be issued at least three weeks before departure. Under EU rules, a first rabies vaccination is not valid until 21 days after vaccination, so the passport only becomes valid once the rabies vaccination is valid.
If the animal is travelling outside the EU, about four months’ notice is needed. Blood tests must be taken to check that a sufficient rabies titre (level of antibodies against rabies) has been reached. An approved result must be entered in the passport.
There is space to record routine vaccinations in the passport, but this is not necessary for travel.
Owner
Only one person can be listed as owner in an EU pet passport. The most recently entered person is considered the owner. It is therefore important that the person who travels most with the animal is listed as owner.
As the owner, it is important to check that the passport is filled in correctly:
– the passport must be completed according to the instructions at the front of the passport.
– every detail and box must be filled in carefully and legibly, by hand or with a label.
– if a label is used, strong tape must be applied over the label and the line below it.
– the owner must sign the passport as owner, otherwise the passport is not valid.
